Fire Safety

Fire safety is something to think about ahead of time, before the fire starts. When little ones arrive into your home, you want them safe. Plan ahead, let everyone know the plan, do a trial run of your fire safety plan.

You can start your fire safety plan with making sure you have smoke alarms in every room. Check these to make sure the batteries are working properly. Test the smoke alarms once a month. Replace the batteries once a year. Replace any alarm that is more than ten years old. This is critical. Many homes still do not have properly installed smoke alarms. This would prevent so much if it were taken seriously.

Next, have a fire safety escape plan. Create a fire escape floor plan. Start by drawing a rectangle on a piece of paper. Draw one for each room of your home. Then in one color draw the fastest way out of the room, in another color draw the second fastest way out of the room. Know what to do in case of a fire. Drill this into your children so they will know fire safety. Pick a meeting place outside the home where everyone can gather after they have left the burning building. Can everyone in your home, even the children open and unlock all the doors and windows? Make sure babysitters and other caregivers know the escape plan and where to meet once everyone is out of the building. Never go back into a burning building.

Fire safety is one of the most important things you can talk about with your family. Children as well as adults and babysitters need to talk about this constantly. It can be practiced so the children understand better what to do in the emergency. Make sure everyone in your family is safe. Practice fire safety.

We hope it will never happen to you.a fire. But should it happens, be PREPARED, especially for your child. Develop a safety plan. If your home doesn't have enough safe exits consider purchasing an escape ladder. Install smoke detectors on each floor of your house, within 15 feet of a sleeping area, at a high point of the wall or ceiling as smoke rises, near the furnace and washer and dryer, and the basement ceiling near the steps (not at the top of the basement stairs where the door is closed). Fire extinguishers should be installed in plain view, on the escape route, above the reach of children, and away from stoves and heating appliances.
