Preparing for the Hospital Trip
Date Added: April 6, 2006
Are you ready to have a baby? We have created a checklist of things you may want to bring to the hospital. And, keep in mind you may want to get any or all of these items ready at about eight months in case you go into labor a little early.
Gowns/Robe
The hospital will provide you with them but it is nice to have your own, that close in the back so you don't bare it all. A robe is nice if you get cold easy.
Undergarments
Be sure that you pack panties, socks and bras. Pack good socks because your feet may get cold easy and a supportive bra . You may or may not want to buy a nursing bra but only purchase one till you know exactly what breast size you will be. You breasts may be very sore and tender afterwards.
House Shoes/Slippers
Eventually you will get out of bed, sooner if you give birth vaginally, and walk around the hospital halls.
Clothes to go home in
Pack clothes that are comfortable and lose. It may take a little while before you reach your prepregnancy weight so maternity clothes might still be appropriate. If you have a c-section, you may want lose clothes around your stomach.
Toiletries
Consider a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, pony tail holders, hair brush, breast pads and sanitary napkins. The hospital provides you with sanitary napkins but they are usually huge and very long. You will not be allowed to use tampons.
A diaper bag for baby
Most hospitals will provide diapers, formula, an outfit for baby (onesie and blankets during the stay) and a hat. A cute comfortable outfit might be fun to take your little one's picture. And in the diaper bag you may want to consider the following items: a WARM outfit you want your baby to go home in, a warm outer garment, receiving blankets, burp cloths, booties or socks, a hat for the baby, baby wipes, two to three diapers (just in case).
Quarters
Just in case you or someone else needs to hit the vending machine.
List of people to call
It is fun to tell everyone the good news so make sure you have their number. Many hospitals don't allow cell phones on.
Infant Car Seat
Hospitals will not let you leave without one. Make sure you have it properly installed (see our website for tips) before you get there because many seats are NOT installed correctly causing safety issues.
And don't forget to…
Call the doctor
When you are leaving for the hospital, you should give your doctor a call to let him know that you are on your way, and how far apart contractions are. Your doctor and/or on call doctor will meet you for delivery.
Call the babysitter
If you have other children make sure you plan on where they will go.
