Pregnancy and Cravings

Being pregnant and having cravings really go hand in hand. You usually can't be pregnant without experiencing some sort of craving, and you usually are not craving something unless you are pregnant. While it is pretty normal to have cravings and want certain tastes while you are pregnant, how do you know when you should give in?

As long as the cravings that you are experiencing during your pregnancy are good for you foods, don't hold yourself back. Your body is probably trying to tell you that you are lacking of a certain vitamin that a veggie you are craving is filled with. Maybe you are craving white bread for the source of calcium that you get from it? If the food you are craving is classified as good for you, go for it, and satisfy that craving.

With that said, there are many pregnant women that have uncontrollable cravings for chocolate, and ice cream. Perhaps even pickles and ice cream. While it certainly will not hurt to satisfy this craving every once in a while, try not to go over board with it or you will surely gain more baby weight than you are looking to. Not only will you gain more weight than you are expecting, you should stay on a healthy well balanced diet while you are pregnant, and try not to over do your sugar intake no more than you have to.

While most pregnant women experience cravings of food, there are also some pregnant women that have really odd cravings. If you are having odd cravings for things that should not be consumed, you must not give in. This is something that you should discuss with your doctor. Having cravings for things that are not normally eaten is actually more common during pregnancy than you think. There have been reports and studies of pregnant women wanting to eat sand because it looked so delicious, a cigarette ashtray smelling good, and many others. If you are pregnant and experiencing these odd cravings, this is perfectly normal. Just do not give in and eat sand or anything else that you should not be eating. Talk to you doctor about these odd cravings that you are having while you are pregnant, he may be able to explain them to you.

Cravings are perfectly normal for any pregnant woman to experience. Giving in to them is fine too, as long as you are not giving in to them every time you turn around. Be sure that you are eating a healthy diet, and giving your body and that baby growing inside of you all of the vitamins and nutrients that you both need.
