Playards

Playards can give the parents a rest while the child is occupied and playing safely in an enclosed area. You can take these to the park, use them while traveling or in your own home. The parent can enjoy that cup of coffee while the child plays securely.

Playards are very versatile. Think about your needs and where you would use a playard, whether indoors, outside or traveling. Buy a playard based on your needs. Most have mesh around them, which is easy to clean. You can find fabric ones but they are more costly. Some playards come with a bassinet or a canopy. The bassinet is great so you can have a safe place to change the baby, which is sanitary too. The canopy will keep your child cool as well as give him a shade. Most are compact enough for easy transport to and from Grandma's house. Some keep a playard downstairs as a changing table for the baby and a place for baby to sleep.

Never leave your child unattended. Make sure that your playard is safe. Don't allow large toys or stuffed animals inside so that your toddler can use them to climb out. Every child will try to escape sooner or later. Keep the playard free from sheets or blankets which can become easily tangled causing a hazard for the child. The mesh on the playard should be no more than ¼ inch.

The prices on playards range anywhere from $60 to over $200. Find the one that most fits your needs and budget. There are playards like the basic play pen style. These are very portable and most have wheels. They are easy enough to move from place to place. They give your baby a safe place to play so you can relax for a minute, or actually get a shower. The larger ones are great for toddlers and older kids. They enclose an area outside so your child can play safely and enjoy being in the outdoors. Playards make great shower gifts and are a must have for most parents.

•  If you purchase a playard from a garage sale or private owner, make sure it meets safety standards; old fashioned playards, known as playpens were made of wood and the slats were placed too far apart for today's safety standards.

•  Never leave your baby unattended in her playard.

•  Convertible playards usually have a bassinet feature.
