Lamps & Lighting

Newly constructed homes do not always have a ceiling light, so you should plan your nursery's lighting with this in mind. For a well lit nursery, choose several lamps or use a combination of lamps and wall sconces. Floor lamps aren't a good idea in the nursery because your baby may use it to help him reach a standing position. Wall sconces or wall mounted lamps are a great choice because they do not require any cords.

Your nursery will need at least one night light, but be aware that recent studies indicate that your child's sight may be injured by night lights. An alternative would be to place a night light in the hallway and not leave a night light on in your child's room. You will, however, need a night light in the nursery to help you with night time feedings and changings. Many children have been raised with night lights in their rooms without reduction in their eye sight. You can talk to your doctor if you would like more advice on nursery night lighting.

•  Keep a log of the maximum bulb wattage of each lamp, so that you will not have a fire hazard.

•  Lamp cords should be kept out of baby's reach at all times.

•  Remember when your baby is crawling he will be able to reach cords that are underneath the crib and other high bottom items.
