Crib Mattresses

Most of your baby's first few months will be spent sleeping, so you want to make sure that your crib mattress is comfortable and safe. Your major concern when purchasing a crib mattress should be the fit of the mattress into your crib. The fit should be snug so that your baby's limbs will not get stuck between the mattress and railings.

Another factor to shop for is fire resistantancy. Some fabrics are treated so they are fire resistant. Interestingly, wool is naturally fire resistant. Wool fibers can catch fire, but they do not burn well; also wool fibers do not melt which means that it can not stick to skin and cause further injury. Selecting wool blends for use in your baby's crib is another option worth considering. However, regulations require manufacturers to treat all materials that are to be used for clothing and covering your infant be fire resistant.

It's important that you don't over think or become obsessed with the possibility of fire in your baby's nursery. For added comfort to you, place a fire extinguisher in a safe place near your baby's nursery. Statistically, not many fires occur in baby nurseries, so relax, but being prepared is your best weapon against any risk to your newborn.

Remember...

  • Your baby's crib mattress should fit snuggly into your crib to prevent injury to your infant.
  • If you are replacing a mattress on a crib, measure carefully not only the length and width of your crib, but the height of the current mattress. Your goal should be to replace the mattress with as similar a size as possible.
  • Most mattresses are made of plastic, which can conduct cold, so you should consider purchasing a cloth mattress cover to help keep your baby comfortable, especially in the winter.

Find the crib mattress YOU want!
Nervous about online shopping? You shouldn't be.

Buy the mattress to fit the crib (not to small). You do not want to leave any additional space between the mattress and crib because baby could get stuck. Also make sure the mattress is not too soft to prevent the mattress from conforming to the baby which could lead to suffocation. Some mattresses also have a vibration feature that helps baby fall also.
