Bumpers

There are conflicting reports that bumpers provide a smothering hazard to newborns. However, as long as you diligently check the ties that secure the bumper in place and make sure that it is installed properly, you will find that it can protect your baby from bumping into the wooden slats or spindles.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is believed to be caused by suffocation. The more careful that you are with the bedding, like the bumper pad, the safer your newborn will be. Fluffy comforters and over-sized blankets should not be used in your crib, cradle or bassinet. Instead, select breathable natural materials like cotton and wool in a snug size.

If you opt to use a bumper pad, check the ties frequently and straighten the sides if they bind. As long as you are using the Back to Sleep method of lying your infant on her back for sleeping and your crib bumper pad is secure, you should feel comfortable that you are doing everything that you can to keep your newborn safe.

•  Make certain that the bumper pad fits snugly in your crib.

•  Secure the bumper to the crib with the ties that can be found on the open corners of the bumper.

•  Test the ties occasionally to make sure that they are secure; if they are loose, simply resew them into place.
