Pillows & Sleepers

Forget everything that you like in a pillow when selecting a pillow for your baby's bed. Fluffy anything is off limits when it comes to your newborn's bed. Suffocation is thought to be the root of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), so pediatricians recommend that you do not use fluffy, big items in your baby's crib. You can find flat, firm pillows for your baby's crib, but until your baby can easily lift and move her head, do not use even the flat pillow in your baby's crib, bassinet or cradle.

Your baby should be placed on his back at bedtime. Because SIDS is suspected to be caused by your baby's inability to move his head. To keep your baby from rolling from a "Back to Sleep" position, you can find pillow sleepers that keep your baby on his back or side. The pillows fit snugly so that your baby can't roll onto his tummy. Once your baby can rollover easily, you do not have to keep checking all night that he is sleeping on his back. Your baby will be safe as long as you keep the "Back to Sleep" tips in mind.

•  Don't use a pillow under your baby's head for the first three to six months.

•  When you use pillow sleepers, make sure that they are placed below your baby's under-arms for freedom of movement.

•  Flat pillows are best for use in your baby's crib.
