Baby Blankets

The difference between a receiving blanket and a blanket are that receiving blankets are a standard sized cotton flannel material that you can swadle your baby in. Of course you can also use receiving blankets to cover your baby; however, you will need a regular baby blanket for cold weather. A receiving blanket won't keep your baby warm on a cold winter night even if your baby is in a blanket sleeper.

More is not better when you are selecting the size of your baby's blanket. Use properly sized blankets so that the blanket won't "bunch." This will help protect your baby from suffocation, which is thought to be the most significant risk to your baby in the first six months to one year of life. However, don't obsess about suffocation to the point that you are not able to rest. As long as you purchase a blanket that it sized for your baby's bed, whether it is a cradle or full-sized crib, you can be assured that you have done everything that you can do. Remember to place your baby on her back when you lie her down for sleep. Then cover your baby with her blanket. This will provide your baby with a safe and cozy rest.

Light-weight flat blankets are the best for your newborn. Your baby will not be able to lift or push the blanket away, so using a light weight fabric that will keep your baby warm is best. Natural fibers breath and synthetic fibers do not, but synthetic fibers are a good choice to avoid allergeries; for example, some people are allergic to wool. Obviously, you won't know if your baby is allergic to anything when he is born, so this should not be a great concern to you. However, if your other children are allergic to wool, you should not select wool for your newborn.

If you select synthetic fibers, make sure that the item fits in your baby's bed. Do not use an oversized bedding in your crib, bassinet or cradle. When your baby is safe, you will be a more confident parent. Your confidence will help you relax and your baby will feel your confidence and be comforted by it. The most important rule for baby bedding is snug fit; remember this and you will be providing a safe place for your baby's slumber.

•  Try to purchase one properly sized blanket for your crib, bassinet and cradle.

•  Avoid fluffy comforters until your baby is able to roll over easily.

•  You will be happier if you have at least three receiving blankets on hand.
