Preparing Your Children for a New BabyIf you have a child and are pregnant with a new baby brother or sister for your child, you will want to be sure that your child is prepared for the new baby. Many times the older sibling might be jealous because the new baby is taking up so much of mom and dad's time. You will not want your child to feel jealous, and there are some ways that you can prevent this from happening. Once you find out that you are pregnant, you should tell your children that you already have. Tell them they are going to be a big brother or sister, and that they are going to have big brother or sister jobs that they will need to help with. If you make it sound like as if they will be bigger, and this means big kid responsibility, they will love the idea. Because every child wants to be a big kid, you should tell them that you are going to need lots of help with the new baby. Let them know the things that they will be able to help with, and that having a new baby means they get to be big. Tell your child that they can help you with the new baby by getting you a diaper for the baby, or singing to the baby. Your child will be so excited that they get to have such a personal role in the new baby's life. Once you bring your new baby home, you will want to be sure that you do let your other children help you. Of course, give them age appropriate jobs such as fetching a clean diaper, or telling the baby a story while you rock him to sleep. You will find that your child will love doing these things, and will often ask if he can help with the baby as well. Be sure that you take special time for your other children once you have brought your new baby home. You will be tired, and the new baby will take up a lot of your time, but you will need to be sure that your other children are not deprived of your attention. Making sure of this will help keep down the jealousy issue, and they will not feel as if they have lost their mommy to the new baby. |
