Formula

Formula feeding your infant is an option that provides as much nutritional value as breast milk. Doctors prefer that new mothers try to breast feed, but sometimes you do not produce enough milk or there are problems with breast feeding. Rest assured that formula feeding is not a sign that you have failed as a mother. Today's formulas have been developed from scientific studies of breast milk so that your newborn will enjoy all of the vitamins and minerals that he needs.

From regular formula mixtures in liquid or powder form, to Nutramogen, which is prescribed by your doctor for extremely sensitive tummies, your choices have never been better. You can premix powder formula for use within 24-hours or mix it fresh before you feed your baby. Mixing just before feeding will add air to the formula, which could upset your baby's tummy, so be alert for discomfort. If there is no discomfort for your baby, you can continue to mix before feeding otherwise prepare your bottles and store them in the refrigerator.

Warm refrigerated bottles by bringing water to a boil in a sauce pan. Remove it from the stove and place the bottle in the heated water. Check the temperature each minute. You test the heat on the inside of your forearm, which will be very sensitive to heat. If the formula is too hot, add a bit of refrigerated formula and mix quickly. Never heat bottles in a microwave oven; it heats too fast and too hot. Relax with your baby during feeding time and he will be a happy eater.
